Útdráttur: Electricity is presently generated on the island of Nevis by a combination of a 12.3 MWe diesel power plant and a 2.2 MWe wind-farm. The island presently has a peak demand of approximating 9.5 MWe. With a conscious drive towards becoming less dependent on fossil fuels for power generation and seeking to reduce the cost of electricity, it is proposed that geothermal power will be added to this energy mix within the next three years. It is necessary, however, to take a well-structured approach towards this geothermal integration, wherein a holistic assessment is taken of the existing power generation and distribution infrastructure with the view of how geothermal power can be best utilized; adjustments to the existing power system may be necessary to achieve this goal. This report carries out such an assessment, highlights the areas for improvement and ultimately proposes a centralized operation and control system that would enable the Nevis Electricity Company Ltd. to unify the operation and control of all three generating stations, and the transmission and distribution grid in the most economical and ergonomic way possible.
