dc.description.abstract |
For German readers Icelandic literature has – for a long time – almost exclusivly been novels of Nobel price winner Halldór Laxness, “Advent” by Gunnar Gunnarsson and the Nonni-novels of Jón Svensson. This has changed at least since 2000, when more German translations of Icelandic books have been published than ever before. As there does not exist any extensive and detailed description of the history of Icelandic-German translations, this will be done here. This essay describes the history of Icelandic-German translations from the 19th century until today and examines possible reasons for the sudden increase of German translations from Icelandic language as well as the influence of the popularity of Scandinavian literature in Germany on the reception of Icelandic literature. |
