Smith and I. Barstad (2004). Precipitation data from the ECMWF reanalysis, ERA-40, are intended to be used in order to calculate the background precipitation, i.e. the non-orographic precipitation component. A comparison between the ERA-40 precipitation and precipitation measured by the rain gauge network is thus necessary. The goal is to identify how relevant the use of ERA-40 is, in such a context, and to confirm or invalidate this choice.
