Útdráttur: The geological characteristics of the Assal rift are favourable for the development of geothermal energy in Djibouti. The Government plans to exploit the geothermal resources in the Assal region to enable public access to a reliable, renewable and affordable source of energy. The Assal-Fiale geothermal project is located on a site that has scientific, ecological and tourist importance. Using the geothermal resource is believed to be a positive way to generate electricity in the area but improper management of the resource can cause possible negative impacts on the environment. Environmental impacts assessment will help to understand and minimize negative impacts of the project and with good management can support the environmental, economic and social goals of sustainability. This report presents the possible environmental impacts of the project and their management which aims to minimize them in accordance with national and international regulations and the geothermal utilization experience gained in Iceland.
