Útdráttur: Hallmundarhellir is a cave site with man-made stone structures, located beneath the surface of the Hallmundarhraun in the interior of Borgarbyggð, West Iceland. The cave was discovered in 1956 by Kalman Stefánsson of Kalmanstunga and was previously explored by Gísli Gestsson in 1958. In July 2017 Kevin P. Smith, Brown University, Guðmundur Ólafsson, National Museum of Iceland and Magnús Sigurðsson, The Cultural Heritage Agency of Iceland documented the condition of the archaeological remains within the cave with a crew from the TV show “Expedition Unknown”. During this visit to the cave six animal bones were removed from the cave for radiocarbon dating and ancient DNA analysis. The locations of these bones were mapped precisely within the cave as part of the effort to improve understanding of this site.
